(Sacramento, CA, USA: January 31, 2013) The Linux Professional Institute
(LPI), the world's premier Linux certification organization
(http://www.lpi.org), announced that in 2012 the organization surpassed
two significant milestones: delivering over 350,000 exams and 120,000
certifications worldwide since the organization's inception.

"In the last few years we have noted strong annual growth of our
certification program worldwide. This is indicative of the growing
adoption of Linux in the enterprise and the increased demand for IT
professionals skilled in Linux and Open Source across a wide variety of
industry verticals. We expect this trend to continue, if not
accelerate, in the coming years as we develop new markets globally and
further refine our overall certification program," said Jim Lacey,
president and CEO of the Linux Professional Institute. Mr. Lacey
further credited recent growth to the foundation role of Open Source
technology in Cloud and Big Data solutions where IT professionals
skilled in these technologies are in high-demand: "IT professionals are
seeking credentials where the money is, and our vendor-neutral Linux
certifications demonstrate that they have the "right stuff" for these
innovative technologies: flexibility, adaptability, and both a broad and
deep knowledge of Linux solutions."
Industry representatives provided congratulations to LPI on these
certification milestones and recognized the organization's longstanding
contribution to the advancement of Linux education and professionalism:
CompTIA:
“More than ever companies value IT workers who think strategically,
communicate effectively and understand how to use technology to meet
business goals,” said Terry Erdle, executive vice president, skills
certification, CompTIA. “Clearly, LPI is helping IT professionals hone
these attributes and skills. The milestones attained by LPI attest to
the high-quality of its certifications and the high value that employers
place on these credentials.”
HP:
"In today's world of heterogeneous technologies, IT professionals can benefit from training that provides the skills required to work across several vendor platforms," said Rebekah Harvey, director, Learning Products, ExpertOne, HP. "For well over a decade, HP has accepted LPI Enterprise-level Linux certifications as a prerequisite for its ExpertOne server certifications."
Information Technology Certification Council:
"On behalf of the members of the Information Technology Certification
Council (ITCC), I extend my congratulations to the Linux Professional
Institute on having achieved this notable milestone. Our work at the
ITCC, of which LPI is an active participant, is to promote the value of
IT certifications in providing a qualified workforce to support the
world’s technology needs. LPI's accomplishment is indicative of this
wider industry goal," said Gary Fluitt, Chairperson of the Information
Technology Certification Council.
The Linux Foundation:
"We congratulate LPI on this achievement. Demand for Linux talent is
certainly on the rise, and LPI's milestones are another confirmation of
this trend," said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and
developer programs, The Linux Foundation. "Our last Linux Jobs Report
showed that eight out of ten hiring managers were planning to hire a
Linux professional in the next six months but that finding qualified
candidates was difficult. Linux training and certification programs help
meet this growing demand and address these issues."
Linux International:
"LPI has reached another milestone: 350,000 exams worldwide", said Jon
"maddog" Hall, president of Linux International. "That represents a
significant number of Linux professionals who took the time to consider
what was needed to be a good systems administrator, studied for that,
and took the tests. That alone is impressive, but the fact that the
certifications were world-wide and distribution neutral is also
important. Free Software is about being "open", "neutral" and
"accessible". I look forward to the next year, as the Linux Essentials'
certificate program becomes better recognized, starting people down the path
of being a certified Linux Professional."
Pearson VUE:
"Pearson VUE has worked with the LPI certification program since its
inception, so we share in their pride at this accomplishment," said
Raymond Murray, vice president, Pearson VUE Global Channel and IT
Business Development. "Interest in LPI certification has skyrocketed
over the last couple of years, and-as LPI's exclusive test delivery
partner-Pearson VUE is committed to providing the technology innovation
and excellent service needed to help this global program meet the
increasing demand for qualified Linux professionals, now and well into
the future."
SUSE:
"Today, Linux professionals are directly in the center of exciting innovations that are changing the way we work and live. More and more companies are experiencing a growing demand for Linux expertise. We at SUSE constantly look for people with Linux knowledge and LPI certification is a good proof point in a CV," said Ralf Flaxa, vice president of engineering, SUSE.
The Linux Professional Institute is globally supported by the IT
industry, enterprise customers, community professionals, government
entities and the educational community. LPI's certification program is
supported by an affiliate network spanning five continents and is
distributed worldwide in multiple languages at more than 5,000 testing
locations. Since 1999, LPI has delivered over 350,000+ exams and
120,000+ LPIC certifications around the world.
