Praised, cursed, often misunderstood, what are KDE's semantic desktop tools for anyway? The idea of taking the myriad kinds of information stored on a computer, and trying to find the relationships between it so it's more usable, has been around for a long time. "Semantics", the dictionary tells us, "is the study of meaning". The goal of a "semantic desktop" is to take all the bits and pieces of information we as users collect over time, and make it more meaningful, and ultimately more useful.
I still don't get it. Well, maybe a little bit, but why?
First of all, I DON'T want all my PIM info cross referenced and DB'd unto the death. In fact, I put as little "pi" on my computer as possible. Meta data? What? I can recall a photo shot by its aperture setting better than by what it looks like in an image viewer app or an assigned name like "crotch shot"? So I turn my computer into a slug race for an app that is "not quite there yet"? For me, researching this terrorific trio of questionable apps finally distills down to this telling wiki description: "....focusing on eye candy,...."
