GIMP is a multi-platform image manipulation software (GNU Image Manipulation Program). It is perfect for many photo manipulation tasks, including images composition and construction, photo retouching etc. Unfortunately, version 2.8.14 is not available in core Ubuntu repositories so here is how to install it on Ubuntu 14.04.
