Sun Microsystems plans to create more awareness and usage of open source with the rollout of its open source-based Java Desktop System (JDS) to secondary schools and institutions of higher education. The JDS, which was introduced late last year, consists of a fully integrated client environment based on open source components and industry standards and provides a complete desktop environment and productivity tools which includes the GNOME desktop environment, StarOffice Office Productivity Suite and a Linux operating system.
