The Mycroft developers have been working to adapt the speech recognition system for the Linux desktop, and they have already taken the first steps.
Voice recognition was done before on Linux systems and even in Ubuntu, but the projects never really passed the first stages. In fact, Linux systems are still way behind what Microsoft and Apple are trying to do with their Cortana and Siri systems, but that might change once Mycroft is made available.
This article reads as if a speech recognition engine is being developed to run natively on Linux systems. This is NOT the case. What we have here is a wrapper around "cloud services". Specifically, this project will send your voice commands to Google for processing.
Make sure that you understand and are willing to accept the privacy implications of this before deploying this on your own systems.
You should make your own decisions of course, but for me I will not be connecting my living room microphone to the Google servers. Sorry Google, you will have to look elsewhere for other people's private data. Mine is not available.
