California’s Age Attestation Bill to Exclude Linux and All Open Source OSes

California has passed Assembly Bill 1856, amending the state’s Digital Age Assurance Act to exempt open-source operating systems and applications from its age attestation requirements.

This follows months of uncertainty across the open-source world, but the bill cleared the Senate this week with unanimous support and now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom, who signed the original act into law last October.
The DAAA, effective January 1st, 2027, requires operating system providers to collect a user’s birth date at account setup and pass an age-bracket signal to app stores and developers. AB 1856 doesn’t touch that core requirement, but it redefines who counts as an “operating system provider” in the first place. Full Story |
