Ubuntu maker Canonical revealed today that they plan on reviving their immutable Ubuntu Core Desktop distribution with support for GNOME and KDE Plasma desktop environments and other new features.
After a dormant period following a 2023 developer preview, Canonical has assembled a dedicated, cross-functional team to restart development of Ubuntu Core Desktop. The goal? A safer, more resilient Linux desktop built entirely on Snaps, from the bootloader and kernel all the way up to your apps.
As you may know, Ubuntu Core’s defining feature is its immutable architecture where every component is packaged as a strictly confined Snap. For users, this translates to a desktop that’s harder to break, simpler to recover, and more flexible across different devices.
