Linus Torvalds announced today the general availability of the first Release Candidate (RC) of the upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel series for public testing and early adopters.
Two weeks have passed since the release of Linux kernel 7.3, which is already arriving in the stable repos of your favorite distros, which means that the merge window for Linux kernel 7.4 is now closed, so it’s time to test-drive the Release Candidate (RC) versions over the next couple of months, every Sunday afternoon.
As expected, Linux 7.4 promises many new features, including initial support for Apple M4 computers and the A18 Pro-based MacBook Neo, separate vmid support and hypercall crash support for LoongArch KVM, Btrfs performance improvements, especially in zstd decompression, and support for changing SMB compression through chattr.
