Two New Windows Metafile Bugs Found

Just days after Microsoft patched a critical vulnerability in the way the Windows operating system renders certain types of graphics files, a hacker has published details of two new flaws that affect the same part of the operating system.

The new vulnerabilities were posted to the Bugtraq security mailing list today by a hacker using the name "cocoruder."

Notice that a hacker, not Microsoft's diligent security experts, found the flaw.

Yeah. Microsoft didn't have enough resources.

They were all off doing damage control.

Microsoft would prefer not to discover any vulnerabilities in their own products. People might conclude that more vulnerabilities found means more vulnerabilities total. If they're smart, they really are finding and patching vulnerabilities inhouse, but only in the upcoming Vista. XP and 2003 patches will be held back until the vulnerabilities are rediscovered independently.

And with $50 billion a year going to R&D, who can afford to spend money on piddley security issues?
