REAL Software Enters Linux Development Tools Market, REALbasic 5.5 Builds Software for Linux, Windows and Mac
AUSTIN, Texas (February 25, 2004) — REAL Software, Inc. today announced REALbasic 5.5 is shipping. This latest release of the industry’s most powerful, easy-to-use tool for creating cross-platform software adds the ability to easily create Linux desktop and server applications. In addition, because REALbasic is similar to Visual Basic and includes a conversion utility, applications written in Visual Basic can be migrated to Linux. “As companies seek to adopt Linux for both servers and desktops, the availability of native Linux applications becomes an important part of the decision-making process,” said Geoff Perlman, president and CEO of REAL Software. “REALbasic 5.5 will help accelerate the adoption of Linux by enabling new software to be created and existing software, including the wealth of available Visual Basic applications, to be migrated to Linux.” REALbasic 5.5 supports Linux for x86 Intel platforms running Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SuSE Linux. Other Linux distributions with the GTK+ 2.0 and CUPS libraries installed should also work. In addition, remote debugging is included in REALbasic 5.5 so that Linux applications can be tested and debugged from either Windows or Macintosh. “We use REALbasic to develop our award-winning products, such as those we
created for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) and the Marine
Biological Laboratory (MBL),” said Kevin McCabe, president of Wolf Rock
Corporation. “REALbasic 5.5 will be very beneficial for our government and
education-based clients who use Linux extensively, because we can now easily
add Linux to the list of platforms we support.”
In addition, REALbasic 5.5 adds the ability to create console applications and
adds SOAP and XML support. REALbasic 5.5 also includes a new single-user
database engine designed to be both dependable and flexible. The full
list of new and improved features in REALbasic 5.5 are included with
