Redwood City, Calif., October 18, 2006 — Funambol, the mobile open source company, today announced that it won two first place Gold Star awards from Mobile Village readers for its consumer push email and PIM solutions. The company has also been recognized with the Silver Star award for its enterprise mobile email solution and a Bright Star award for CEO Fabrizio Capobianco’s visionary leadership in consumer mobile software.
“We are very pleased to be recognized by Mobile Village readers, who are also users and community developers of Funambol mobile open source software,” said Hal Steger, VP Marketing, Funambol. “Our push email and PIM capabilities for consumers reflect the strength of the open source model as envisioned by our CEO, Fabrizio Capobianco. We expect Funambol to continue to pave the way for new mobile services on commodity handsets.”
The fifth annual Mobile Star Awards honor and promote the best companies, products, deployments, and leaders in mobile and wireless technology. Winners are chosen by subscribers to Go Mobile®, MobileVillage’s free online newsletter sent to technology executives, mobile professionals, IT managers, developers, and top tech journalists.
“The Mobile Star Awards program has grown along with the mobile industry,” says MobileVillage Editor Gary Thayer. “This year we saw hundreds of entries in about 60 categories, and nearly 1,000 people took the time to cast votes. The Mobile Star Awards are unique in that the judges are Go Mobile® readers. These people have a great knowledge of mobile products and success stories, and are eager to share that knowledge with the world.”
Funambol v3, which enables mobile carriers to deploy mobile services on commodity handsets, provides over-the-air synchronization of email, contacts, calendars, todo lists and other PIM data. It offers push email capabilities for sending, receiving and forwarding email, and allows users to open attachments, check email online and offline, and accept or decline meeting events.
Since its preview release earlier this year, the number of Funambol software downloads has more than doubled to 700,000, reflecting pent-up demand for mass market mobile applications. The open source software is being downloaded by a burgeoning community of developers who are testing it on a wide range of mobile devices all over the world. Carriers are increasingly interested in Funambol for its expected ability to reach the largely untapped market for consumer push email.
