It's well known that the Jmicron JMB363 SATA,PATA controller is not supported by RHEL AS 4.4 at this time, what causes attempts to install RHEL 4.4 (CentOS 4.4) from IDE CDROM to fail. Work around for mentioned issue follows below.
At initial boot prompt specify:
boot: linux all-generic-ide pci=nommconf
This will start graphical install. When you will be brought
to screen that defines "Kernel boot options" type in
corresponding window:
all-generic-ide pci=nommconf
In this case we do have to perform CentOS install from SATA Optical Drive,
otherwise CentOS won't work properly with several SATA drives. So, option:-
linux all-generic-ide pci=nommconf
is obviously unacceptable for production environment .
Have you tried with a backported Fedora 6/Rawhide or RHEL 5 beta kernel compiled to work with CentOS 4.x? 2.6.20 and 21 are much better at SATA than a fully-patched 3 year-old kernel.
