Despite the resent FUD campaign that Micro$oft has launched against Free and Open Source Software they seem to be supporting FOSS at the same time by sponsoring FOSS advocacy events such as FOSS-ed, look for the "Gold Sponsors" at the end of the page.

These events are organized by the Sri Lankan FOSS community (FOSS.lk).

Some of the past events:

* FOSS-ed On Wheels (taking FOSS-ed outside of the capital) http://www.foss.lk/events/2007/feow/kandy
* FOSSSchool (Aimed at educating school children and university students)
* ApacheCon Asia 2006 (first ever ApacheCon held in Asia) http://www.asia.apachecon.com/
* FOSSEnterprise (Educating the public and private sector CIO/CTO community of Sri lanka)
* Software Freedom Day http://www.foss.lk/events/2006/sfd
* Foss-ed for hackers http://www.foss.lk/events/2006/fossedforhackers
* FOSSCode http://www.foss.lk/events/2006/fosssl/fosscode
* Foss-week/FOSSSL 2005 - http://www.foss.lk/events/2005/foss-week/index.html

Event sponsors, especially top sponsors, frequently help choose participants and panelists, get prferred and extra seating, and they often get preferred ad locations, banners, and program-giveaway stuffers. I can't tell you what the Sri Lanka sponsorship bought, but it *bought something*, you can bet.

This is called reaching your demographic, and showing the flag. You've seen all the ads for Msoft on the Linux sites -- this is most likely an attempt at getting a word in edgewise rather than support.

it might also be some thing to do with their failing V1sta campaign currently under way in SL. Nobody seems to give a damn about their new OS here in Sri Lanka.
