This started as a serious article but I struggled with it. When I argued it from the other side, suddenly the points seemed easier to make. I think the major issue has to do with how Microsoft's embedding previous MS Objects in the XML wrapper makes it impossible for anyone to conform to the standard but Microsoft. I interviewed the lead from OOo for about 2.5 days and read a lot of material. It's really a scary notion especially when you have government people confused and angry and in favor of Microsoft.
