In the article SVJN says:

Quoting: After all, it's not like Microsoft is really in the business of "selling" software to users anymore. The folks from Redmond want to rent you their software. They want you to use their software from a centralized server ala Windows Live and Office Live. In short, what they really want to "sell" you is support and service.

Actually, they were always *renting* software. Serving software as a service from a centralized server doesn't change that in any way. The only difference is that instead of running it on your computer they are running it for you on their computers. In the latter case their control is ultimately even bigger.

But it was always renting. To actually sell software itself is impossible. It's code, a language structure, an information that seamlessly flows through the network and between people. You can sell a copy of the software, but you can't sell software itself, just as much as you can sell a copy of a description of an idea printed on paper and not the idea itself.
