I know...and in a way, I feel kinda sad for the guy...I think I know how he feels. Doing that was all in the name of fun and competitiveness. Lord knows I wouldn't want any nasty politics or ill will to enter into this project. There was no malice intended by doing it. Besides, if you stop and think about it... this would be the best thing that could ever happen to Tux500. Knowing that even if Bill said ok, Melinda would immediately squash it strikes me as PYP funny. And the response from the most powerful man in the world? (yes, even more powerful than gwb in my opinion) His response...?

Yes Dear.

I think we ought to all go sign up...prime the pump so to speak. Nothing taunting or smarmy (on the surface anyway). Just showing our support for a lone voice's efforts.

Heh. In reality, they've got nothing to worry about.

The overall Vista 500 'Bigger Community, Better Car!' campaign-site that contains the above petition is http://vista500.ifastnet.com/ The actual interchange between helios and the vista500 Site Admin within the main topic 'Vista 500 Sign up and send your thoughts on getting Microsoft into the race!', from http://vista500.ifastnet.com/signup/, is duplicated here:

Post subject: The "Petition" This is pretty much it -- sign up, give your thoughts and unless you state otherwise, I'll forward your email address to Microsoft. If it works, they sponsor a car (from what I understand not like the one depicted on this site. An actual Indy car. ----------
The logic for encouraging Microsoft to actually sponsor a competing Vista500 racecar to Tux500's, is that the more attention is drawn to Microsoft, the more attention is drawn to Linux/FOSS. Fairly straightforward.

One concern in this would be that M$ might not fall for the bait even if many persons *DO* sign the Vista500 petition as suggested above. This is because (as critically stated elsewhere on LXer), one of M$'s main goals as a company is clearly to keep its current customers and draw new customers for its inferior products. Another less-stated goal of Microsoft's is to maintain that elusive quality of "mindshare", as described in such fine articles as SerachEnterpriseLinux's 'Two ways Microsoft's mindshare sabotages Linux desktop adoption' at http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/columnItem/0,294...

Those signing the the Vista500 petition are either already pro-Microsoft -- by dint of being M$ Vista customers a.k.a. "fanbois" -- or else are decidedly pro-Linux/FOSS LXers. The renown M$ Sales and Marketing Dept certainly realizes that they are unlikely to get new potential customers right off of the above petition's email list. M$ likely also realizes that Vista500 promotion alongside Tux500's could very conceivably result in a possibly-significant loss of "mindshare" away from M$ and to Linux/FOSS in the eyes of Indy500 viewers. A potential loss of "mindshare" through competing head-on with Linux/FOSS in an event such as this could conceivably end up being *MUCH* more damaging for M$ than simply trying to promote its own products here. From this scenario, the M$ Sales and Marketing Dept would be decidedly *AGAINST* sponsoring and promoting a Vista500 car to compete with the pro Linux/FOSS Tux500's. Best for M$ to stick to its current slew of anti-FOSS, FUD strategies.

OTOH, M$ and its fanbois must also realize that a Vista500 car with absolutely *NO* Tux500 competition visibly present at the Indy500 also allows M$ to maintain its "mindshare" ................................................
