...but the explicit requirement (as written) for Gnome is disturbing - unless they just mean "if you compile with special Gnome support, you must have at least this version" rather than "from now on, you must have Gnome installed..."

I think they just upped the version number. IIRC "gnome" is now also a requirement. All you need are the base gnome libraries, not the desktop enviroment. Think gconf.
