Windows does not dominate the server side, and never has. I also question the 90-95% desktop figure. I get so bored with authors who parrot these figures without doing a basic fact-check. It's not easy to get meaningful numbers, because it's always reported as a horse race- dollar sales per quarter. Other factors are ignored, such as numbers of units sold, numbers of free downloads, and current installed base.

But even with content-shy articles like this one http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6041804.html you can see that Windows does not dominate the server room. Dollar sales do not reflect number of units; we all know how expensive Microsoft's Byzantine licensing is. The big commercial Unixes are also expensive, but since Solaris became free beer and charges only for support, are these ace analysts even measuring it?

Grumble growl. Someday I shall try to figure it out myself.
