The EULA says that you can "Disable" the automatic updates, and you clearly can not do so.

This is bordering on unbelievable.

What's unbelievable is there's no class-action lawsuit announced. My present client has spent millions developing their change management tracking system, and this sort of activity on the part of commercial software is completely subverting that effort.

It's hard to believe that such smart, rich, and stock-price driven corporations put up with this behaviour.

It's also a little unbelievable that Microsoft would think they could get away with it, but that seems to happen over and over again too.
