Both the original Linux.com article and this response fail to state the most important thing with GPG:

Keep your private key backed up somewhere safe. Safe as in a physical copy, not an electrovic one. Keys are relatively short and OCR'ing or even typing them in manually is possible. Keep one copy in your safe (you do have a small safe, don't you?) and preferably keep one copy somewhere else (e.g. at one of these personal safes in a bank, if you happen to have one).
