Charm. Fiveash's piece is part of its continued charm offensive, here aimed at the developer community. As is written in the piece
Quoting:Microsoft is to release details in three phases.

Between now and June it will garner feedback from the developer community. Then, at the end of June, Microsoft will publish the final versions of technical documentation – along with definitive patent licensing terms.
As mentioned in this piece, part of Microsoft's immediate aims in the current disclosure is its efforts to satisfy anti-trust concerns of the European Union. Again, this measure is specifically aimed to try charming the developer community ....... not aimed at commercial entreprises through THIS tactic.

Further legal discussion of legal matters arising fom Fiveash's piece at Sander_Marichal's 'Useless' LXer thread, http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/27068/ (Opinion: Interesting current discussion here by someone out to set bare Microsoft's near-term future plans with this spec-release -versus- someone taking clear pains to veer the discussion decidedly AWAY from Micosoft's true intentions here)

Harm. A clearly intentional harm is Microsoft's hostile takeover threats on Yahoo! using almost any means at its disposal.

Bully Ballmer strikes again!

Also harmful is Microsoft's aim to divide and conquer the overall F/OSS and Linux community as much as it can (e.g, project developers, commercial companies, F/OSS end-users, .... etc.)

Microsoft's possibly-restrictive continued "patent licensing terms" in the 14,00-page developers' disclosure and its overall anti-source FUD ploys also fall under this latter category.

vv, The title of this thread just about sums it up. It's better known on the Charm end of things as M$haft's Embrace and Extend.

A correction on vv's "its overall anti-source FUD ploys also fall under this latter category": I think it's better to write "its overall anti- OPEN SOURCE FUD ploys also fall under this latter category. " M$haft's not against source-code in general; in fact it needs and encourages source-code development for its OWN use. M$ is just very wary of the OPEN part of Open Source code and programs

Also a correction on my part: M$haft Embraces, Extends, and Extinguishes. That last part is where some of M$'s Harm can come from.
