. . . or like BeOS (and its software, called BeWare), is this an uncommonly unfortunate choice of an acronym?

First and foremost, in the television show "Get Smart," KAOS was the organization that CONTROL was fighting.

To say nothing of the homonym for KaOS which, of course, is chaos.

Maybe they're fans of Roger Waters?

And after watching all those weird names, they amused themselves to death? Well, that makes sense!

Linux includes a distro named Debris and a library called Clutter. Names that are contrary to any sort of sane marketing seem to be popular with some Linux developers.

Marketing suits have nothing on a geek sense of humor :-)

caitlyn, you forgot to mention the OS called Inferno and its programming language called Limbo. And the text editor of Inferno is called ACME, just as the old DOS-virus.

And now they wonder why it didn't pick up...

Don't forget Con Kolivas' renamed scheduler BFS. sigh. http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/bfs/bfs-faq.txt

You couldn't give the full name, of course, since this is a family-friendly site. Con is a brilliant programmer but his choice of names is, well...

Actually, it's reimplemented.

Quoting:BFS

At least he had a reason to call it that way :)

Well, you know what Con means in French I suppose?

And BFS, wonder what that looks like. I guess something like:

>[-]>[-]<<[->+>+<<]>>[-<<+>>]<<

I assume this scheduler was not written in the language the name indicates.

I surely hope it wasn't! But the idea is still fun.

I'm not sure it would really be open source any longer...

gus3, Shrugs. Yet another attempt at humor fails. You do realise that Con is a Greek Australian?
