The laptop is NOT free. If you read the course description you will see that it says:

"FEE : $1499 (includes all class materials and Linux laptop). This class is also available without the option of the laptop for $900."

Obviously, the laptop costs $599, and you pay for it if you choose to get it.

I, personally*, see nothing wrong with that usage of the term "Free". Consider, isn't that the way most people get their Free copy of Windows OS when they buy a new computer? So in the vernacular, it's Free!!! [Microsoft is just more deft in their execution, they do NOT so explicitly and so publicly break out the actual charge. It's outrageous how amateurish this company plies its business. Were they in MS's class the charge would be the same or more without the freebie. That's the way business should be operated***.]

*** For instance, no matter what the OS, MS GETS its cut.

It's free in the sense that if your employer pays the 1499, you get to keep the laptop.
