All of these articles about Skype replacements miss the point-- when you don't control the server or the network you're still at the mercy of the service provider. You can swap client software and try different service providers until you keel over from exhaustion, and it still doesn't solve the core problem.

Another related point is that even IF such service providers eventually allow Skype replacements, Skype's new parent company, Microsoft, may STILL enact some Embrace, Extend, Extinguish strategy to ensure that their native Skype client software REMAINS optimally functional on the service providers' servers and networks....and this to the detriment of Skype replacements.
