How valid is the underlying reasoning ?

|Every time one talks about an office suite, the reference is MS Office appplications.
Most people I know just say : "Why should we bother for something compatible, while we have the gold standard, and you acknowledge yourself it's the best ? And we don't care to pay our reference software maker.".
That compatibility argument is a wrong promotional one, and worse, is counter-productive. I believe FOSS advocates should innovate in promotional tactics. Now I don't have any proposal !
