The part I like best about gentoo is the number of scientific packages I can easily install and how current the packages are. There are some really exotic things I can install by typing one line.

If you like open source applications and want a lot of them easily installable, Gentoo is great. I've found that I have to compile and install a lot of things to make a Redhat system useable for my work. With Gentoo, I have to do the same things, but it is soooo much easier. I just type 'emerge app-sci/iverilog' and that's it.
