There is nothing hidden about support costs. He acts like these "hidden" costs sneak up on you only after you've deployed a new system. You can't blame free software for not having zero cost, so his insights are weak and shallow. Does he expect the mySQL develoment team to show up at your door and fix your problems, for free?

He simply has fallen (intentionally or otherwise) into the definition of "free" game. Freedom isn't free, but it's priceless.
