Try Bodhi Linux for Beauty and Customizability

Scarcely a day goes by without an update being released for one Linux distribution or another, but today saw the launch of one I think is worth some attention.

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff Hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Sep 8, 2011 3:34 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Kernel, Linux
If you have been by my blog recently you may know that I have been going back and forth with Asus support getting an RMA done on my T101MT. I sent the unit in with a bad screen, it got returned had the same issue happened again, it got RMAed again and had the same issue happen a third time. Assuming something was simply wrong with the unit I had beyond repair, I was sent a 100% new unit.

Bodhi Linux 1.2.0 Released

20,000 forum posts and over 100,000 downloads later the Bodhi team and I are proud to announce our second point release - Bodhi 1.2.0 Current Bodhi users can easily update their system to this latest release. This release is largely for keeping packages up to date, so the following are the core system packages that have been updated for this release:

Ten ways to tidy up the Linux desktop mess

As a huge fan of Linux for more than a decade, I've witnessed a lot of drama in the community surrounding the operating system, with much of the polemic focused on the desktop. Sometimes the wrangles have just consisted of arguments over the relative merits of alternative desktops but the kerfuffle has recently grown much worse and centres on Ubuntu's Unity desktop. However, all is not lost. The Linux community has proven again and again over the years that it is incredibly agile, so this issue can easily be resolved. Here are 10 possible solutions.

Distro Spotlight: Bodhi Linux

Small, fast, light and easy to customize - we’ve heard it all before - but I’d say that Bodhi Linux has enough individual character to warrant consideration.

Asus Tech - You will NOT fool me Twice

So I wrote a post at the start of this month describing a positive experience with Asus's support involving my netbook that was running Linux. I would like to advise all the other Linux users out there not to make the same mistake I did - Just because tech support doesn't blame your operating system, doesn't mean they know what they are doing.

HOWTO: Linux on the Dell Inspiron Duo

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff Hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 30, 2011 9:34 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial
I was pleased to see that most all of the netbook was functional OOTB with the 3.0 variation of the Linux kernel my latest Bodhi build was running (including multi-touch on the track pad). I plan to write a full review later on, today however I would simply like to share two tricks for getting some important functionality out of your Dell Duo while running Linux.

Bodhi Linux: First Impressions

I chance upon Bodhi Linux when my newly installed Linux Mint LXDE 11 could not connect high speed broadband device though I have repeated installed and re-installed Broadcom wireless drivers. Referring to Wikipedia that listed Bodhi Linux as part of lightweight Linux distribution, I downloaded the minimalist Bodhi Linux that is only 382MB in size.

Bodhi easy to install, operate

There is a new Linux distribution making the rounds and it is pretty impressive for a number of reasons...

HOWTO: Create a Debian Meta Package

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 26, 2011 10:22 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Debian
The following is a short tutorial on how to create a Debian meta package. Just as a brief background for those that do not know what a meta package is - a meta package is a Debian package that simply tells the package manager to download a whole bunch of other packages. Meta packages are useful for allowing for the quick installation of an entire group of packages.

Five Things the Enlightenment Desktop Does Best

Fair warning, I am a huge fan of the Enlightenment desktop. The following items in this post are things I believe the Enlightenment desktop (and it's developers) are doing better than some of the other open source desktops...

Quick Look at Bodhi Linux 1.1.0

  • Linux, BSD, and everything else...; By Barnaby Hoffmann (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 26, 2011 3:45 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Enlightenment
A lot has been written about Bodhi Linux in its short existence. Bodhi appeared out of nowhere not even a year ago it seems and quickly gained followers aplenty. Usually there's a good reason for something like this. So much has been written in such little amount of time, I'm not going to go into all the aspects of this little distro, for example that Bodhi means Enlightenment, a nice word play on the default desktop environment of choice E17, just a quick look.

Getting Connected to Illinois State University ISUNET from Linux

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff Hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 25, 2011 4:57 AM EDT)

This week I started a masters program in mathematics and a job as a graduate assistant at Illinois State University. My laptop is never far from my side, so of course one of the first things I did on campus was connect to the internet.

Or at least attempt to...

Bodhi Linux Is Beautiful & Works On Very Old Computers

Try a lightweight, beautiful Linux distro that works on very old hardware. Bodhi Linux can run on processors with only 300 mhz so imagine how well it will work on your machine. With the Enlightenment desktop environment, Bodhi looks great and runs light. With the Ubuntu repositories, Bodhi has access to a plethora of quality free software. With a little work, it can become your perfect desktop.

One time around the Bodhi Tree

So bodhi is a Pali/Sanskrit work that loosely translates to "enlightenment". They seem to make heavy reference to this lineage in their artwork and as well as their naming. For example, they have two recommended software sets: Nikhila (meaning entire/all in Hindi) - their full featured software collection Pratibha (meaning light in Hindi) - their lightweight software collection...

HOWTO: Easily Share Files between Linux Machines using sFTP

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff Hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 14, 2011 7:31 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Linux
Sharing files between two different computers on a network is something that I feel is often harder than it should be. Maybe it is just my bad luck or some poor configuration settings on the various networks I connect to, but Samba shares seem to almost never work for me. In the past year I've taken to using sFTP to transfer files back and forth between my various devices. sFTP is nice because it works over the internet and with any Unix devices that support ssh (including the N900)

Linus Torvalds Ditches GNOME 3 For Xfce

I'm using Xfce. I think it's a step down from gnome2, but it's a huge step up from gnome3. Really.

Set Penguins Crawling on your Desktop!

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff Hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 3, 2011 5:26 PM EDT)
  • Groups: Enlightenment
There are a lot of great Enlightenment modules out there. Today I would like to feature one that is far more fun than it is useful. It is called simply "penguins" and it sets your choice of Penguins (or Lemmings!) crawling all over your desktop and interacting with your windows!

iPhone 5 to convert 42% of Android users, 67% of BlackBerry

  • Beatweek Magazine; By Timmy Falcon (Posted by Jeff91 on Aug 2, 2011 12:29 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial
The numbers show that less than half of Android users surveyed (47%) say they plan to buy another Android phone. That means user dissatisfaction with the platform is so high that the majority of people currently using an Android have already given up the on the platform. Aside from the kind of tech geeks who desire an overly complicated Linux-based phone, most current Android users are explainable either by the fact that the iPhone wasn’t on their preferred carrier at the time or an instance of a salesgeek promising them that Android would be “just like iPhone but better.”

Asus Support - Excellent and Linux Friendly

I've been recommending Asus computers to friends and clients for some time now. After my recent dealing with the Asus support/repair center I will continue to recommend them for the foreseeable future.
