Forget bootable USB pendrives and use an iPod to boot Linux on a Mac.

But if Sun's new CEO is going to convince me that his company can remain a dominant player in enterprise software, first he's going to have to get his story straight, particularly when it comes to Linux and open source.

Faster broadband, but only for Linux users?

Red Hat has said that the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) saved the federal government more than $15 million in datacenter operating and upgrading costs by migrating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The FAA executed a major systems migration to Red Hat Enterprise Linux in one-third of the original scheduled time and with 30 percent more operational efficiency than the previous system. In addition, by switching to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the FAA realized 50 percent savings and spent less than $10 million on a project initially estimated at $25 million.

BI is one of the fastest growing enterprise software segments, and the number of options available to a company is exploding. Computer Solutions has been appointed UK distributor for the Embest range of ARM development tools. These include UNetICE, a low-cost, high-speed JTAG emulator for ARM processors, debugging and Flash programming software to support it and a wide range of ARM evaluation boards. UNetICE connects the USB or Ethernet port of a PC to the JTAG interface of the ARM target board and allows Flash programming and debugging.

News from the Desktop Linux Summit in San Diego.

The Free Standards Group (FSG) will unveil Linux Standard Base 3.1, the first LSB version to include explicit Linux desktop application support, April 25 at the Desktop Linux Summit in San Diego. The standard has already been endorsed by Linux leaders Red Hat and Novell, along with other major Linux players such as AMD, Asianux, CA, Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, Mandriva, RealNetworks, Red Flag, and Turbolinux, according to the FSG.
