OpenIndiana 151a Desktop review

OpenIndiana is a distribution of illumos, which is a community fork of OpenSolaris. And OpenSolaris itself was the open source version of Solaris, before it was discontinued by Oracle, after Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, Inc., in January 2010.

OpenIndiana Build 151a is the latest development release, and the third so far. A stable edition is slated for release before the end of this year.

There is a desktop edition and a server edition. This review is based on test installations of the desktop edition.

Pardus is a Linux distribution developed by the Turkish National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), an arm of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜB?TAK). Unlike most distributions, it is not based on another; an original, in the same sense that Debian is an original Linux distribution.

This article presents a review of Pardus 2011.2, the latest stable version, which was released on September 19 2011. It is the third release this year and judging from the distribution’s release history, Cervus elaphus, as it is also known, should be the last for the year.

Muon Package Management Suite is the package management application that will replace Kubuntu’s package manager when Kubuntu 11.10 is released next month. It is designed for Debian-based systems, so it could be used on similar distributions, not just on Kubuntu. In fact, it is included in the default repository of Linux Mint 11.

The suite is made up of three graphical interfaces - Muon Package Manager, Muon Software Center, and Muon Updater. This article shows screenshots, taken from an installation of Kubuntu 11.10 beta 2, of all three applications.

Jitsi is a multi-protocol and multi-platform voice and video instant messenger client. It is mostly implemented in Java, and is Free/Open Source software. Its multi-protocol features are similar to that of Kopete, the native IM client for the K Desktop Environment. This srticle is a review of ALT Linux 6 Simply, which was released on the same day as ALT Linux 6 KDesktop.

Like the KDE edition, 32- and 64-bit installation ISO images are available for download. The test installations, on real hardware and virtual environments, used for this review, were all done using the 32-bit edition.

The stable version of Ubuntu 11.10, code-named Oneiric Ocelot, will be released sometime in late October, but the first beta has just been released on September 1 2011. This article just presents a few screenshots to showcase some of the new aspects of the desktop. In line with recent releases, Oneiric Ocelot does not look like it will come with any new features in the installation program and installation process. But the Software Center looks much different, and better.

DigiNotar B.V., a unit of VASCO Data Security International, Inc., is an Internet Trust Service Provider based in the Netherlands. Part of their business involves issuing digital certificates. DigiNotar’s security system was compromised and they failed to notify everybody they were supposed to. A result of that breach is that fake certificates were issued – in DigiNotar’s name – for Mozilla and some others. The extent of the damage is so bad that The Mozilla Foundation revoked certificates issued by DigiNotar. If updates have not been issued yet, delete DigiNotar from the list of Certificate Authorities. Here’s how to do it.

Mandriva 2011, code name Hydrogen, is the latest desktop edition of the popular Linux distribution. Released August 28, 2011, it marks a new direction in the development of Mandriva desktop distribution. Where there used to be three versions of previous editions, the Release Notes say that only two versions are available for download. In reality, however, there is only one version of Mandriva 2011 and it is available as an installable Live DVD edition for 32- and 64-bit platforms. Mandriva 2011, the latest desktop edition of the popular Linux distribution, was released yesterday.
