Novell Inc. on June 18 released its first service pack for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. This service pack, also known as SP1, features significant enhancements in virtualization, high-performance computing, security, interoperability, and system management. After a long wait, the first official Stable version of Elive, 1.0, has finally been released! This version is ready for the end-users and not just hard core testers. It is a more intuitive easy to use and more efficient system. It has better integration of the file-manager and the mime-types, a nice kernel especially for multimedia and big processes loads, a light weight foot print, much better compatibility with your (possible) Windows system/software, more hardware supported, better graphical recognition, and many more things.. MEPIS has announced the 'Spartacus' release of antiX, a lightweight derivative of MEPIS. AntiX is built and maintained by MEPIS a community member, as a free version of MEPIS for very old 32-bit PC hardware. AntiX is built using the MEPIS Linux 6.5 core including the MEPIS 2.6.15 kernel and utilities, but mostly it has a different set of default user applications: Fluxbox and IceWM, AbiWord, Gnumeric, Leafpad, Scite, Nano, GIMP, Firefox 2, Sylpheed-claws, Dillo.... AntiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors. LinuxQuestions.org has a nice collection of antiX MEPIS 6.5 screenshots.

It's been another busy week in the LinuxQuestions Screenshots department. Vine Linux has been updated to version 4.1. This is a minor update consisting mainly of security and bug fixes that have surfaced since the release of version 4.0 exactly three months ago. The latest version of the distribution uses kernel 2.6.16.36 with wireless networking support and hibernate functionality. It also includes GNOME 2.14 desktop, Firefox 2.0.0.1 web browser, Anthy and SCIM Japanese input method, VL Gothic Japanese fonts, Totem and BMP media players, X.Org 6.9.0, a number of server components, and a graphical installer with hardware auto-detection and several new features. This release improves user-friendliness introducing Xfce-4.4 as the new default desktop, customized for the scheme of interaction that is familiar to dyne:bolic users. Another important new feature is the ability to create an encrypted nest to prevent access to personal data stored in home directories. No complicated notions are required, our user friendly setup deals with usb and harddisk storages as usual, in case the nest is encrypted you'll see your home icon upgraded to fortress, then everything that goes in your nest is protected. I have decided to make another distro I'm calling "Ubuntu Ultimate Edition" it has everything listed in the Christmas Edition plus much more. I have however removed Java, Flash and Acrobat reader due to licensing agreements. Please freat not included in the release is my custom repo which contains all the software and much more. Beta6 of SimplyMEPIS 32 and 64 is available for testing. Now users can opt-in to choose the NVIDIA 1.0.9746 driver. Ntfs-3g improves Windows filesystem compatibility. NVIDIA legacy version 1.0.9631 is available for Beryl support with older chips... The Beta 6 iso also uses the ntfs-3g driver for reading and writing NTFS partitions from user space. For those who want it, the new NVIDIA 1.0.9631 legacy driver may be installed from the MEPIS package pools. Hibernate support has been improved for laptops. - DistroWatch. Many thanks to the Linux Mint community from which we managed to gather precious ideas and feedback. We've brought a lot of changes into Bianca and we hope you'll like it. Here are the main changes: Minty Artwork and a brand new desktop... We've put a lot of efforts into Bianca and started writing our own applications and our own packages. A new repository was added to Bianca for users to be able to get the latest innovations through APT upgrades. It is also possible to upgrade from Bea to Bianca. - DistroWatch. This is the first official sidux release after stabilizing and largely rewriting the distribution framework, further efforts in that direction are ongoing to improve the hardware support/detection and streamline the live operations. While the first release concentrates on two KDE flavors (lite and full), special purpose releases and support for other desktop environments and window managers are planned. This new Puppy has major improvements in the underlying architecture as well as the applications, and some new applets created by Puppy enthusiasts. Finally we have embraced the XDG menu system, our new PET package management system is further refined. New applets are Pfind (file finder), and Grafburn (CD/DVD burner). Upgrades are many, including Pupctorrent (torrent download client), Network Wizard, Pbcdripper (CD ripper), PuppyBackup, SoxGui (audio file 'Swiss army knife'), mtPaint, elscpi. Ubuntu "Feisty Fawn" 7.04 has two more months before its planned release on April 19th. Herd 4, the fourth alpha release is another milestone on the road to final release. Herd 4 is the first herd release after Feature Freeze, meaning testing is very much needed and each alpha/beta release from now on will require extensive testing to guarantee rock-solid stability in the final version. - Ubuntu.com. Feisty Fawn Herd 3 CD release brings with it many new and exciting applications. For this latest release of Kubuntu 7.04, usability looks to be the common theme. Besides usability there have been updates to many common applications as well as a changing in the default database application in Kubuntu. Feisty Fawn, the current name of the latest development branch of Kubuntu, will expand on the brand new infrastructure that has landed in Edgy as well as branching out in some exciting new directions. Feature development in the Feisty Fawn release will be improvements to hardware support in the laptop, desktop and high-end server market, and aggressive adoption of emerging desktop technologies. - Kubuntu.org. Tollef Fog Heen has announced the third alpha release of Ubuntu 7.04, also known as "Herd CD" - now with painless multimedia codecs, new GNOME Control Centre, updated versions of most GNOME applications, and Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM): "Ubuntu 'Feisty Fawn' 7.04 has two and a half more months to go until its release date planned in April 19th, and already many exciting features have been introduced. The beta version of Bianca was released and is available for download. Bianca comes with two brand new themes: Bianca-Blue and Bianca-Green which give the distribution a whole new 'minty' look. Only one panel at the bottom, a Slab-like menu, new default icons. The following applications were added to Bianca: mintMenu, a replacement for the GNOME menu; mintConfig, a Control Center application; mintDisk, a program which automatically mounts FAT32 and NTFS partitions; mintDesktop, which now comes as a package, has a graphical configuration front-end; mintWifi, which now comes as a package. - DistroWatch. Rubén Rodríguez Pérez has announced the release of Trisguel GNU/Linux 1.0, a 100% free, Debian-based distribution sponsored by the regional government of Galicia in Spain and with complete support for the Galician language. The project's first stable release comes with kernel 2.6.18.6 and includes GNOME 2.14, IceWeasel 2.0, OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, 3D desktop with AIGLX and Compiz, pre-configured software repository containing additional Debian 4.0 packages with security updates, new installer with improved hardware detection, support for assistive technologies, new live system which can be installed on USB storage devices, and other new features. - DistroWatch.
