Why I Choose CentOS for a Server

There are many options available for Linux distros, over 500. Most of you can make into a server. However, if you are looking for the professional level server that, in my opinion, leads all other distros in functioning as a server then you need to investigate CentOS. Here is a list of the reasons that CentOS is top on my list for a server.

One of the new features in Ubuntu 8.10 is the ability to create an encrypted directory for content you do not want others to access. Oh, by the way, did you know that anyone can read your files that are in your home directory? Here is an example of sue logged in and able to open files in mike's home directory. However, note that they are opened read-only so they cannot be changed. Still, who is looking at your stuff?

The self-signed certificate is a certificate that you can create yourself that will provide SSL encryption but without the verification of your website from an outside source. The outside verification does cost money. In other words, you can get the protection you need, encryption by doing it yourself. One thing to note, if you are taking people's credit card information then you will need to get a signed certificate as a warning appears when you are using self-signed certificates.

When building a mail server, one of the difficult choices is how big to build it. This tutorial is one way to test the load on a server to determine what it can handle. In order to evaluate the load on your mail server you can run smtp-source and combine that with snapshots of top to evaluate the load and I/O. Open two terminals and in one run the smtp-source command and in the other snapshots for top.

Postfix Mail Server will allow you to set a base domain and add any number of virtual domains. Virtual domains can either be virtual alias domains which are the domains that your server is the final destination for and also virtual mailbox domains which do not have local accounts and only pick up mail through IMAP or POP3.
