Amazon Releases Kindle Linux Source Code

Amazon has announced the release of the source code for all their Kindle products. The basic underpinnings are Linux kernel 2.6.22that includes E-ink drivers, Kindle-specific hardware drivers, and probably some other Kindle-specific hardware patches. There are no specific licenses mentioned on the page but it should be safe to assume all of the code is released under the GPL since all of the modified packages are also GPL and Amazon isn’t releasing these as binary modules/blobs.

If IBM Buys Sun What Happens to MySQL (and Sun’s other projects)?

There’s been alot of discussion about IBM being in talks with Sun Microsystems about a $6.1 billion acquisition. Initially Sun’s stock (ticker: JAVA) shot up significantly while IBM’s stock (ticker: IBM) initially dropped a few points before recovering to only a small loss. While this may or may not be good for each company, I started to wonder what would happen to some of the projects that Sun manages, specifically MySQL but also ZFS, OpenSolaris and others.

KDE 4.2 Review

I recently did a bunch of package unmasking in my desktop Gentoo installation and did an emerge of KDE 4 .2 and I thought I would share my experiences in my shiny new desktop environment (unfortunately I was unable to see how Amarok2 integrated with KDE 4.2 due to some MySQL embedded compilation issues for 64-bit Linux).
