We're very pleased to announce the public release of Wasabi, a log file-monitoring tool that infrastructure dev Andrea Barisani wrote to replace oak. Wasabi watches a log file for lines matching a user-defined regular expressions and reports on the matches, sending an email as soon as an associated line is found, or reporting periodically.

Province of Ontario moving students to StarOffice

Sun Microsystems scored a big sales win Monday, landing Canada's elementary and secondary schools as its latest customers for the open source-based StarOffice 7 office productivity suite. The Ontario Ministry of Education acquired StarOffice licenses for all the province's 72 public and Catholic school boards, making it potentially the largest StarOffice 7 delivery in North America. As a result, about 2.5 million students eventually will have access to one of the leading alternatives to Microsoft Office.

SourceForge, the world's largest open source software development community, has released the newest version of its Enterprise Grade software namesake from its corporate parent VA Software...But there's a twist to the release this time. SourceForge Enterprise 4.1 is not based on the open source software that runs sourceforge.net. Instead, a company spokesman confirmed, the 4.x generation of SFEE is a complete break from SF.net.

Unix and Linux security solutions provider Symark has introduced a new version of its system administration software, PowerBroker, which supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES. Symark's PowerBroker 3.2 enhances security for these OSes by providing selective delegation of root password, thereby reducing the risk of accidental damage or malicious activity. It also manages privileges and access to third-party applications such as databases, CRM and ERP systems, and file structures for individuals and groups.
