Gumstix has launched an open-source “Garret 50C” carrier board for its 58 x 17mm, dual-core DuoVero computer-on-module family, the company’s higher-end alternative to its single-core Overo COMs. The board was developed with the company’s online Geppetto DIY design and quick-turn prototype manufacturing service, which customers can use to customize the board.

Gumstix and Arrow launched a customizable DragonBoard 410C expansion board for UAV and MAV applications, that adds NimbeLink LTE and camera support. Gumstix and Arrow Electronics announced the availability of a $149 variant of its AeroCore 2 board called the “AeroCore 2 Expansion Board for DragonBoard 410C.”

The Gumstix “Poblano 43C SBC” features a TI AM4378 SoC with WiFi, Bluetooth, GbE, and optional cameras, touchscreens, and Geppetto-based design customization.

Variscite unveiled a 50 x 20mm “DART-MX6? module that runs Linux or Android on the Freescale i.MX6, with up to 64GB eMMC flash and -40 to 85°C support. Variscite’s claim that the 50 x 20mm DART-MX6 is the world’s smallest computer-on-module based on Freescale’s i.MX6 system-on-chip appears to be a valid one. It beats the smallest ones we’ve seen to date: TechNexion’s 40 x 36mm PICO-IMX6, and Solid-Run’s 47 x 30mm microSOM i4. It’s also just a hair larger than Variscite’s own 52 x 17mm DART-4460, which is based on a dual-core TI OMAP4460 SoC, and Gumstix’s slightly larger 58 x 17mm Overo modules, which use TI Sitara AM37xx SoCs.

On Kickstarter, Zyro is pitching a “DroneBall” quadcopter that runs Linux on Gumstix COMs and acts like a smart aerial ball for multi-player games. The Zyro DroneBall doesn’t look like a ball — nor does it act like any ball you’ve ever seen that isn’t made of Flubber. The quadcopter can hover, zig, and zag within a virtual aerial arena, mimicking a hockey puck, soccer ball, or an Ultimate Frisbee disc, says Zyro. It can even take the role of an extra player on the field interacting with another DroneBall.

Gumstix is shipping a capacitive multi-touch ready, customizable baseboard for its Overo COMs that works with a new Overo Storm-P COM with enhanced WiFi. The “Arbor 43C” is a capacitive touchscreen replacement for the resistive-ready Gumstix Chestnut 43 baseboard, and similarly pairs with the company’s Linux-ready gumstick-sized Overo computer-on-modules. The new baseboard enables the attachment of a 4.3-inch multi-touch touchscreen, including separately available displays made by Newhaven Display International.

Gumstix unveiled a major expansion of its Geppetto drag-and-drop custom embedded board design platform. In addition to supporting the design of custom baseboards for Gumstix’s Overo computer-on-modules, the browser-based service now lets customers create custom Linux-compatible SBCs based on the TI Sitara AM3354 SoC and receive assembled boards within three weeks.
