Palm cancels Foleo sub-notebook

Palm CEO Ed Colligan announced the cancellation of the company's Foleo mobile companion today in a post on the company's official blog. Colligan cites the need to focus effort on Palm's next-generation smartphone operating system as the reason behind the decision.

Palm's Foleo delayed until October

Putting another hitch into a product release that has already been roundly booed by critics, Deutsche Bank analyst Jonathan Goldberg put out a note Wednesday saying that Palm's new Foleo has been delayed. Initially priced at $500, the Foleo is essentially a Linux-based, large-screen companion device to the Treo, allowing users to create e-mails and edit documents using a 10-inch display and a full-sized keyboard. The new device, which weighs a relatively hefty 2.5 pounds, synchs automatically with the user's Treo, and includes a battery with up to five hours of life.

Palm announced two new software providers for Foleo: LogMeIn & Wind River

At LinuxWorld in San Francisco, Palm announced two new software providers for the Palm Foleo mobile companion. LogMeIn, the world's leading provider of remote connectivity, will bring remote PC access capabilities to the Palm Foleo through secure connections over the web, enabling easy desktop remote control, data backup and file sharing. With this application, users can quickly and securely access files and network resources on their home or work computers when away. Palm has also selected Wind River as its Linux platform provider for future Foleo software releases.

Slim Linux laptop has potential

Palm's Linux-powered Foleo has potential, but only if Palm can stop denying that the device is actually laptop, reckons Sascha Segan of Gearlog. Palm has positioned the Foleo as a "mobile companion" for itinerant workers needing only email, document prep, and PowerPoint capabilities.

Palm unveils Linux-based "mobile companion"

Palm has used Linux to build a "new class" of mobile device. The Foleo aims to expand the email, Internet, and productivity application capabilities of mobile phones such as the Palm Treo, by adding a full-size keyboard and a larger screen. Very few details about the Foleo are known at this point. Opera, which supplied its Opera 9 browser for the device, has confirmed the Foleo to be based on Linux. For its part, Palm has published a few photos and brief videos of the device, while promising to release more details tomorrow.

Disagreements between developers from the G Palmtop Environment (GPE) project and the administrators of the mobile Linux portal Handhelds.org now include a trademark dispute. Handhelds.org claims trademark ownership of the name GPE, and has demanded control over the GPE IRC channel.
