Open vs Closed Source, Linux vs Windows, these decisions in the Enterprise boil down to a choice between placing an investment in People or placing an investment in a Vendor such as Microsoft.

The story on LXer from yesterday Introducing pointy-haired bosses to FOSS caught my attention, and after seeing the usual point and counter-points in one of these debates, I thought I should chime in with my own perspective. In the Enterprise, the question of whether to invest in Open Source is really a decision between investing in People or investing in a Vendor. When you invest it People, you grow the skill set of your team, and with the right people on board, you can produce your own fixes and patches far faster than you'll get a vendor like Microsoft to even admit there is a problem. This article is some advice for CIOs and IT executives who want to evaluate Open Source but might be going about it the wrong way.
