The purpose of this page is to introduce people new to linux to some programs I use for common tasks on my computer (sorry, no games). I include a list of programs to install beyond the default Ubuntu Linux distribution. Most of these notes would also apply to Debian GNU/linux, because Ubuntu is based on Debian.

I understand seasoned Linux users tire of the "You can use Linux" themed articles. This article is not for you.

Still, I am constantly amazed at how many people I meet who have never heard of Linux and/or Free Software. Most of these people have been using computers for a long time. I make no apologies for this updated guide for newcomers to Linux concerning my favorite applications.

Like the reviews we all read nowadays about potential purchases, people like to see what other "normal" users have experienced, compare several reviews, and decide for themselves.
