Peter Quinn has announced to his employees that he will be resigning as CIO of Massachusetts, in the wake of continuing political in-fighting and unfounded (and publicly refuted) accusations over travel improprieties in the Boston Globe
I'm very sorry to report that Peter Quinn, the CIO of Massachusetts who has been at the center of a controversy relating to his efforts at the Information Technology Division (ITD) to adopt the OpenDocument format for the use of the Commonwealth's Executive Agencies, has resigned, effective January 9, 2005. According to an email that he sent today to the employees of the ITD, the principal reason for his resignation is his desire not to be the personal focus of controversy regarding the open format decision. The email also stresses, however, that his departure does not signal any change of policy on behalf of the ITD.
No one has proved any MS involvement. But you have to question motive. Who benefited from Peter Quinn getting hammered by the Boston Globe. Who would have been motivated to to pass the data to the reporters? It had to be a leak. The reporters whouldn't have access t such records.
CIOs anywhere are now less likely to propose something similar to Peter Quinn knowing that accusations will likely be leveled at them. Any past difficulty, true or false, will suffice as an excuse and family members will be considered open targets. Journalists have few scruples and will do almost anything.
This is a corrupt method of dealing.
