Technically they do not have an OSI approved license. http://www.squiz.co.uk/mysource_matrix/licence_faqs

There has been some controversy in the past over the degree of "Openness" with their license.

Basically if you make *any* changes to the code, you *must* submit them back *and* sign away all ownership of those changes. See section 2.5: http://matrix.squiz.net/evaluations/licence

I would never classify this product as "Open Source" under even the most generous definition of same.

It's not better than Joomla! either...believe me...I've used both.

*THIS* thread is a great illustration of the value added by readers' comments. Something about the story looked a little fishy, to me, but I didn't have time to dig into it. Many eyeballs works on more things than just code.
Well, I dunno if I can claim "too many eyeballs". :-)

I was a member of the audience when Squiz made their pitch to this being an open source product to a conference in early 2005. They did the release/pitch as part of AGIMO's release of their "Open Source Guide" for Australian Govt.

See the 31st March press release here: http://www.auug.org.au/events/2005/ocg/media.html

Squiz/Mysource were selected by tender(?) for running the new AGIMO website/cms. And hence the whole timing etc.

Their pitch sounded... skewed to me, so I chased the details that evening, where I felt my intuition was accurate. There have been a few stories around: < 5, that talk about their claim to be Open Source, but it was a while ago. I'd be pressed to find any now. There was a recent (1-2 months ago) fuss generated by a more prominent oss coder about how companies are jumping on the oss bandwagon. That article really reminded me of Squiz.

Cheers!

Thanks for the link!

We need more news from the land of Oz and New Zealand. You folks may have to wear velcro suits to stay on the planet, but overall you're doing a fine job getting free software into government. (Of course, darn near everybody is ahead of the U.S. in that regard. Publicly, at least).

Peer review at work. :)
