Quoting:The symbol for Salix is the bonsai. Like a bonsai, Salix is small, light and the product of infinite care.
Interesting, because there was a Debian-based mini-distro named "Bonsai" Linux (really spelled with a "z" replacing the "s") from approximately eight years ago .

Info on this discontinued distro is at DistroWatch's 'Bonzai Linux' page found at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=bonzai

Quoting:Several days ago, I was thinking about how I had not really done a lot with Slackware-based distros other than OpenSUSE. I looked for the latest version of Wolvix, which I had written about a few years ago, but found it was discontinued. This is unfortunate, because while writing that blog item a few years ago, I got the sense when talking to lead developer and new-dad-at-the-time Kenneth Granerud that he was on to something.

Better-known Slackware-based distros that have been actively maintained by developers within the past year are:

- Zenwalk Linux; DistroWatch page found at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=zenwalk

- Vector Linux; DistroWatch page found at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=vector

Somewhat less-popular Slackware-based distros that have been also maintained by developers within the past year are:

- Absolute Linux; DistroWatch page found at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=absolute

- Porteus; DistroWatch page found at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=porteus

- Kongoni GNU/Linux; DistroWatch page found at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=kongoni

NONE of these distros, including either their parent distro Slackware or Salix, seem likely at this point in time to usurp the high collective-popularity of Ubuntu-based distros such as the *buntus, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Ultimate Edition, Bodhi Linux, ... etcetera.

Well, I'd say Debian based distros, but other than that I'd have a hard time arguing the point.

I'd give the credit for that mostly to the wide array of software available for Debian based distros and the ease of installing same.

The quantity of software available for Slackware is underrated since most people ignore Slackbuilds, which with sbopkg becomes an easy to use repository, but it pales in comparison what's available for Debian.

From the article:

One thing people always seem to be amazed by is the sheer speed of Slackware and it's derivatives. Anytime someone tries one for the first time, it's always one of their comments.

Aha! Now we know who the "Slackers" are :-)

jdixon: Yeah, I'm kind of amazed at Salix's speed, and it's worth trying the others that vainrveenr lists (oh, and you're right about the Debian thing . . . .).

vainrveenr: Thanks for listing the other Slackware-based distros. I seem to remember years ago not being able to get Zenwalk to run on a laptop, but I'd be glad to give it a try (huge irony, since I was a Zen monk in the '90s).

Guilty as charged. :) There are some others though.
