Why not just use Mint?

I fail to see what problem Ubuntu MATE solved when we already had the highly polished Linux Mint MATE edition! Since Mint is using Ubuntu's base anyway (with lots of Mint tools and customizations incorporated along with codecs, flash, etc.) what's the point of Ubuntu MATE?

In the many interviews I've heard with the project leader, Martin Wimpress, I think he wants to use the Ubuntu base, with all the Ubuntu updates (some of which Mint chooses not to push to users), and he thinks that trading off the Ubuntu name will attract more users.

I'm not sure what the current dist-update situation is for Mint, but Debian and Ubuntu have a longer history of that working.

This was exactly what I said when Ubuntu MATE was announced. Why? We already have it in Linux Mint MATE.

Speaking of Linux Mint MATE... I've been going through my storage of old computers and parts - trying to do something with the stuff or toss it in the garbage. Anyway, I have four older PCs that were either missing power supplies, memory, hard drives, or any combination of those items. I was able to find most of the missing items in my parts bins.

Well, one of these PCs is a 2006 Dell B110 with a 2.53 GHz Celeron D processor (which was slow even in 2006). After adding a like-new 350W Antec PSU, 2GB of PC3200 DDR memory, and an 80GB WD IDE hard drive, I installed 32-bit Linux Mint 17.1 MATE. I was worried about the integrated intel graphics, but it runs surprisingly well. It even plays Youtube videos fullscreen on a 17" 1280x1024 LCD monitor. Still, I disabled the Compiz bits, along with compositing, to avoid any potential issues.

So, what am I going to do with it? It is going into a clubhouse at an RV Resort, for public use. It's free to them, and cheap advertising for me. And on the desktop, I placed a PDF letter titled, "About This Computer".

Here is most of what it says...

Quoting:Hello,

The computer you are using was found next to a trash dumpster. It was sold by Dell in 2006. The owner probably never imagined it would still be in use by others today.

Upon examination, the system would no longer boot. A virus had destroyed critical files on the hard drive. The owner probably lost a lot of valuable data, if he didn't have a recent backup.

All that was needed to revive this PC was to reformat the hard drive and reinstall an operating system on it. But, why not put a safer and faster OS on it this time?

So, we installed Linux Mint on this PC. Linux is immune to Windows viruses and malware, because it's not Windows. Linux is safer and more secure than Windows by design. In fact, there is no anti-virus software running on this computer. This PC doesn't need to have it's drive cleaned every month, like some other operating systems. In fact, it will still be running as fast as it is today (barring any unforeseen hardware failure) – 5 years from now.

Linux is the operating system used by NASA, Wall Street, Internet backbone servers, Google Android phones and Chromebooks. The largest and fastest computers on earth run Linux.

We are happy to provide this PC for your use. We are also proud to be your local computer service provider.

This computer is an example of how we can restore older computers and make them useful again. If you are having computer problems, or wish to stop having computer problems, please call us today.

We also provide new customized computers, websites, blogs, data recovery, local area networking and data backup assistance.

Have a Wonderful Day!

Just my way of promoting Linux to the public, and hopefully getting more clients.

Why do we need Mint when we have Ubuntu? Why do we need Ubuntu when we have Debian? Why do we need Debian when we have Windows?

More choice is always good. As long as both projects are making contributions to the upstream desktop they are using everyone wins.

@Bernard

I think Jeff may have meant, why do we need another locked down OS (systemd) when we already have Windows and Macs, for that.

Or not. ;)

I was going to write a detailed answer, but my computer needs to do a reboot after an update. (snark)

I think Ubuntu MATE just completes the set (well almost, Cinnamon isn't a done deal).

Ubuntu now has Unity, MATE (via Ubuntu MATE), XFCE (via Xubuntu), Gnome (via Ubuntu Gnome), LXDE (via Lubuntu) and KDE (via Kubuntu)

It gives Ubuntu users desktop options but separates the projects enough so that they are clearly distinguishable.

@jdixon,

Seems that NOT a whole lot of distros have RatPoison versions or even the slightly more utilized Fluxbox and JWM window-mgrs. OTOH, it would be SUPER AWESOME if Clem Lefebvre could put forth a lightweight LXDE version of LM as the Baboontoo's now do for their Lubuntu. Now that lead dev Philip Newborough is discontinung CrunchbangLinux, maybe Clem could even consider putting out an OPENBOX version of Mint, eh!???

I don't get why there is (X)ubuntu, (L)ubuntu and (K)ubuntu but then there is Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Gnome. Why not (M)ubuntu and (G)ubuntu. Maybe (G)ubuntu would have to be (Gn)ubuntu to take care of the silent G.

I reckon Crunchbang will be back at some point. Jeff couldn't keep away from Bodhi and Point Linux made a return this year as well.

Other than Bodhi, which distros promote Enlightenment in a good light?

I haven't been running it since my old laptop died. But I liked it. (I've been thinking about putting it on my "new" laptop, seeing how it compares in terms of battery usage).

And I'm still seeding 'Waldorf' (the non-PAE version seems the most popular). The torrents are still active, so I guess I'll leave that going for now...

gnubuntu would annoy people that would expect a gnu-focused-distribution (hurd?) with that name.

as for crunchbag, my understanding is that what it does can now be achieved with vanilla debian: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=416517#p41651... , which is quite different from the bodhi situation.

greetings, eMBee. (edit: typo)

Not many (any?) that I know of. Many of the other distros that even provide a default E disc are just an after thought and they are not of good quality.

Other than Elive (which I don't count as a regular distribution) there used to be GEULinux and MoonOS, but I believe those are both now defunct. Perhaps SparkyLinux? It also supports LXDE and I haven't tried it, so I cant vouch for how good or bad it may be.

OpenGEU and MoonOS were both defunct before I started Bodhi four~ years ago.

This brings to mind a question -- just why is Enlightenment gathering so little momentum or even attention?

Any ideas?

Their lack of formal releases scared distros/people away for a long time.

At this point I have no idea though. Wondering why the masses do what they do will drive you insane. I just use what works for me.
