Online LPI training launched
SA Linux trainers Linux Holdings have launched a full range of LPI training courses that will be taught using online and correspondence methods. Providing the courses online with a mix of chat, forums and training materials will allow the company to keep their prices down as well as give students longer-term support.
openSUSE 10.1 package manager fix due this week

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 Arrives
Novell has announced the availability of the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 operating system for servers and desktops. Novell plans on shipping the OS on Monday, which is going to be the first full release of SUSE Linux since the summer of 2004.

Linux IPTV/STB stack gains browser option
Opera Software reports that its embedded browser for devices is available for sublicensing with a Linux-based software stack for IPTVs and IP-STBs (Internet protocol TVs and set-top boxes) from Amino spin-off IntAct. Opera for Devices can serve as a platform for custom web-based interfaces, or simply allow users to surf on their TVs, the companies say.

Freespire Beta 1 arrives two weeks early
Linspire CEO Kevin Carmony announced on the Freespire forum website July 16 that Beta 1 of Freespire has been released -- about two weeks earlier than anticipated. Freespire, a no-cost version of the Linspire Debian-based operating system, features a KDE desktop and a 2.6.14 kernel.

Open source software will gain momentum faster within the government sector than it will in other markets, according to Government Insights, an IDC company. Government Insights estimates a 30 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of open source software as part of total IT spending through 2009. The analysts predict an accompanying paradigm shift in how governments develop and buy enterprise solutions.

In this week's KDE Commit-Digest: Unity, a project to re-synchronise KHTML with WebKit, has begun, with work continuing throughout the week. Support for suspend and resume on KIO jobs. KSpread gets support for scripting with Python and Ruby. One Summer Of Code project, "C# parser for KDevelop", reaches the feature-complete stage, with progress in the "Advanced Session Management", "GMail-style conversations for KMail" and "WorKflow" projects. Fixes made to support the German language in KLettres, with large-scale refactoring work in Kiten.
