Some of you may have read my friend and collegue's blog named "Blog of Helios" and visited his website lobby4linux.com enough to have understood what he has tried and is trying to accomplish with regards to Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management. Many of you probably respect this approach and support it as I do. Others may not have any idea what I'm speaking of. Allow me to background a bit:

The Debian Installer team is proud to announce the first release candidate (RC1) of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Etch. Debian-Installer is a program for installing Linux distributions. It is the official installer for Debian GNU/Linux. It is also one of two official installers available for Ubuntu; the other one is called Ubiquity (itself based on parts of debian-installer) and was introduced in Ubuntu 6.06. Gaël Duval, co-founder and former developer of Mandrake (now Mandriva) Linux, has introduced the first test release of a new distribution derived from Debian and Ubuntu. Ulteo Linux sports a 2.6.15 kernel and KDE 3.5.2 desktop, and aims to introduce revolutionary concepts in managing and updating an OS and applications.

Kristian Høgsberg announced that he is working on a new firewire stack to replace the stack currently in the Linux kernel. "I'm aiming to implement feature parity with the current firewire stack, but not necessarily interface compatibility," Kristian explained, "for now, I have the low-level OHCI driver done, the mid-level transaction logic done, and the SBP-2 (storage) driver is basically done." He went on to explain that he didn't initially intend to rewrite the entire firewire stack, "at first I just wanted to fix the OHCI driver. However any rewrite that addresses the problems in the driver will shift the code around enough to invalidate the quirks and workarounds there.

OS X is more appealing to enterprises as a desktop operating system than ever before and although it is unlikely to take market share away from Windows, the Mac could reduce the number of Linux-based desktops, according to research group Gartner.

The Mozilla Foundation has agreed to make changes to its development and distribution processes in order to better accommodate the needs of Linux distributors. The foundation says it will work directly with representatives of all interested Linux distributions to manage patches, create distro-specific packages, and make collective decisions on policy.

Continuent, commercial open source middleware solutions provider, announced general availability of an updated version of its Continuent uni/cluster software. This new uni/cluster version includes among other things a new management and configuration tool. Continuent uni/cluster for PostgreSQL also now supports new PostgreSQL 8.2.
