Extending Kubernetes API for Complex Stateful Applications using Operator

TConventional wisdom says you can’t run a database in a container because “Containers are stateless!” or “Databases are pointless without state!” However, this is not true any longer with Kubernetes 1.5, which includes the new StatefulSet API object (in older versions, StatefulSet was known as PetSet). With StatefulSets, Kubernetes makes it easier to run stateful workloads such as Couchbase Server, a NoSQL database.

  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Red Hat, Ubuntu
Shuttleworth took specific aim at rival Linx vendor Red Hat noting that a user of the older Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.x (RHEL) operating system could run the system through Ubuntu's Physical to Container (PtoC) tool and end up with a RHEL LXD container running on a modern Ubuntu kernel. A key reason why an organization might do that, according to Shuttleworth, is due to the fact that the older RHEL releases don't have kernels that have been patches for the recent spectre and meltdown CPU flaws.
