Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 Cinnamon RC Screenshot Tour
The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 2 "Betsy" Cinnamon RC. LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a very exciting distribution, targeted at experienced users, which provides the same environment as Linux Mint but uses Debian as its package base, instead of Ubuntu. LMDE is less mainstream than Linux Mint, it has a much smaller user base, it is not compatible with PPAs, and it lacks a few features. That makes it a bit harder to use and harder to find help for, so it is not recommended for novice users.
Dell’s Linux PC sequel still “just works”—but it adds 4K screen and rough edges
Dell hasn’t done any customization to the "Developer Edition" laptop on the hardware side. This is a standard M3800, same as you could order with Windows on it. The specs are identical. To actually order one, you visit Dell’s store page for the M3800 and tick the "Ubuntu Linux 14.04 SP1" option in the operating system box (an option which actually subtracts $101.50 from the laptop’s price, thanks to not needing to pay for a Windows license). You can do (almost) any of the same customizations to the Developer Edition as you can to the vanilla Windows model, with the one major exception being that the Web store interface won’t let you add a second storage device.

It's Alive! (maybe, sort of)

(No, this isn't an early April Fool's joke. Would that it were.)

FOSS & Accessibility: The New Frontier
Charlie Kravetz said he was a little nervous at SCALE 13x. Not only had his presentation slides gorped about a week ahead of the expo (he got them back together and working, of course), it was Charlie’s first time speaking in front of a group. And the message he wished to convey in his talk, “Accessibility in Software,” was an important one.

The ISO image is 701 MB so testers will have to overburn the CD. Custom 3.19.1 Linux kernel; addition of alsa-sound-card to set up multiple sound cards; Debian 'Jessie' set as default; UEFI support on the live medium (no support yet in the installer); reorganised menu layout; reorganised boot menu; splash enabled at boot - to remove press F7 and choose the 'No VGA' option; improved localisation - but it still needs work; many minor bugs squashed. Please test and post issues, comment in the forums.
The GNU Manifesto Turns Thirty
The GNU Manifesto is characteristic of its author—deceptively simple, lucid, explicitly left-leaning, and entirely uncompromising. Richard Stallman, who published his manifesto in March of 1985, has been known to say that, "with software, either the users control the program, or the program controls the users."

A Linux distro for education: UberStudent
Built on top of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, UberStudent 4.1 "Epicurus" is a customized distribution designed for secondary and post-secondary education. A blurb on the UberStudent website describes the distribution as "Red Hat for education." I was intrigued by this claim and wondered if some customization on top of Ubuntu could really do for education what Red Hat does for enterprise. So I gave UberStudent a try and was very impressed with what I found.
