In celebration of the GNU project's 30th birthday, GNU Hurd 0.5 has been released along with GNU MIG 1.4 and GNU Mach 1.4.

Since 2010, the National Security Agency has been exploiting its huge collections of data to create sophisticated graphs of some Americans’ social connections that can identify their associates, their locations at certain times, their traveling companions and other personal information, according to newly disclosed documents and interviews with officials... collect and retain raw traffic, which includes both metadata and content, about “U.S. persons” for up to five years online and for an additional 10 years offline for “historical searches.”

Lawsuit alleging Gmail ads are “wiretapping” gets judge’s OK
Lawyers representing non-Gmail users of various stripes in a class-action lawsuit say their clients never agreed to have their e-mails intercepted and scanned by Google. They argue that Google's "interception" of those e-mails violates federal anti-wiretapping laws and state privacy laws. And today, US District Judge Lucy Koh agreed with them, refusing to grant Google's motion to dismiss the case.

Roku revamped the low and mid range of its Linux-based streaming media player line with new features and a curvier design, and announced a content partnership with M-Go. The new $50 to $80 models offer several new functions including a headphone jack and WiFi Direct on the remote, but the product line still lacks built-in capabilities for playing YouTube videos or streaming media from LAN shares

Chakra 2013.09 Screenshot Tour
The Chakra project team is delighted to announce the first release of Chakra Fritz. 'Fritz' is the name of a series of Chakra releases that follow the KDE Software Compilation 4.11 series and is dedicated to the memory of Fritz_Van_Tom. With this ISO image we offer KDE SC 4.11.1. In this release, many areas have received a number of improvements that affect multiple applications; most notably a speed boost on Akonadi. The Plasma Workspaces 4.11 will receive long-term support as the KDE team focuses on the technical transition to Frameworks 5. You may have noticed that there is no new artwork with this new series as it is usually the case, since it wasn't ready by the time of the release. Hopefully work on the artwork will be completed soon so we can include it in a future release.
