LXer Weekly Roundup for 22-Jan-2012

LXer Feature: 22-Jan-2012

What a week, no? What started out as Wikipedia joining Reddit, Mozilla and others in blacking out their websites this past Wednesday in protest to the SOPA and PIPA vote in Congress, quickly exploded into thousands of websites following suit. For one, it made surfing the internet on Wednesday a scavenger hunt to find a site that wasn't dark. And two, the ensuing media storm it created had the effect of actually getting Congress to postpone their vote on it. I have been in Los Angeles all weekend attending SCALE 10x and will have my full review for you later in the week, but I will tell you that it was bigger and better than ever. Enjoy!

Key dates for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : A Milestone Journey

Here is the release schedule of Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin". This time Canonical goes to support 5 years to this Long Term Support [LTS] version. So this may be the milestone to them and they try to make it best and more reliable, bug-free and powerful.

MPlayer2 Is Still Being Actively Developed

MPlayer2 -- a fork of the popular MPlayer open-source project that's added on several new features -- has been quiet for a few months but is still being actively developed. The discussion surrounding MPlayer2 was resurrected in the Phoronix Forums this past week. One Phoronix reader immediately jumped to say that "Mplayer2 is dead. Nothing new for 11 months now." and to also criticize the program for the lack of supporting the (outdated) MPEG-1 format.

Some time-saving tips that every Linux user should know

  • Linux-news.org (Posted by linuxaria on Jan 22, 2012 2:49 PM CST)
  • Story Type: Tutorial
Here is a selection of command-line tips that I’ve found useful when working on Linux. The emphasis is on somewhat less-known techniques that are generally important or useful to technical users. It’s a bit long, and users certainly don’t need to know all of them, but I’ve done my best to review that each item is worth reading in terms of projected time savings, if you use Linux heavily.

Deploying ChiliProject on Tomcat

I recently discovered ChiliProject, which is a fork of the Redmine project, and thought I’d take it for a spin. While Redmine project is very stable, it is a little slow to implement new functionality. That appears to be the primary reason for the ChiliProject fork. After browsing through their documentation and doing some google digging, I noticed that there is little to no information on how to deploy ChiliProject to Tomcat. I thought I’d take the time to try to fill the gap a little. It is my hope that this guide will serve as a reference for those of you who are working in primarily Tomcat-oriented shops, but are interested in test driving a high quality ruby-based app without having to setup the required apache+passenger (or nginx+passenger) infrastructure.

The Perfect Server - CentOS 6.2 x86_64 With nginx ISPConfig 3

This tutorial shows how to prepare a CentOS 6.2 x86_64 server for the installation of ISPConfig 3, and how to install ISPConfig 3. ISPConfig 3 is a webhosting control panel that allows you to configure the following services through a web browser: nginx web server, Postfix mail server, MySQL, BIND nameserver, PureFTPd, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Mailman, and many more. Since version 3.0.4, ISPConfig comes with full support for the nginx web server in addition to Apache; this tutorial covers the setup of a server that uses nginx, not Apache.

Linux Apps for Common Tasks: Updated 2012-01

The purpose of this page is to introduce people new to linux to some programs I use for common tasks on my computer (sorry, no games). I include a list of programs to install beyond the default Ubuntu Linux distribution. Most of these notes would also apply to Debian GNU/linux, because Ubuntu is based on Debian.

Windows 8 Might Block Linux From Loading

Back in October 2011, the Free Software Foundation speculated on the possibility that Microsoft might be trying to block out other operating systems from loading within a computer, using a new concept known as the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). Microsoft showed it off a couple of months back, booting up Windows 8 in eight seconds. Linux users: Should you be concerned?

Weekend Project: Loading Programs Into Arduino

In last week's Weekend Project, we learned what the Arduino platform is for, and what supplies and skills we need on our journey to becoming Arduino aces. Today we'll hook up an Arduino board and program it to do stuff without even having to know how to write code.

Kernel Log: Linux 3.3 goes into testing

Linux 3.3 can change the size of ext4 filesystems faster and supports ACPI 5.0, LPAE for ARM processors, Ethernet teaming and hot replace for software RAID. Meanwhile, Linux 3.1 has reached the end of the line, and the Linux Ate My RAM web site explains why Linux often appears to use all of the RAM.

SOPA/PIPA We've Only Won a Reprieve

I just received an email from Demand Progress, a progressive web site, proclaiming, “Wow. We just won.” The reference, of course, was to Wednesday’s Internet blackout to protest SOPA and PIPA.

Explainer: How can the US seize a Hong Kong site like Megaupload?

  • Ars Technica; By Nate Anderson (Posted by BernardSwiss on Jan 21, 2012 9:16 PM CST)
The Megaupload takedown, and the arrest of its key employees, might seem to vindicate late 1990s worries about the Internet and jurisdiction. Does putting a site on the 'Net, though it might be hosted anywhere in the world, subject you simultaneously to the laws of every country on earth? Why would Megaupload, based in Hong Kong, be subject to US copyright laws and to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act?

Xfce's Early April Fool's Joke

I saw a post on the Xfce blog Tuesday or Wednesday about changing versioning scheme of the next Xfce release. I saved the URL knowing that I'd want to write about it. Just thank goodness that a storm blew in and caused my computer to shut off. Otherwise, I might have never seen the Update 2. Dirty rats.

A Book Review of The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction

Face it. Linux may never succeed as a desktop operating system and may have to "settle" for being the king of the server and embedded device markets. But is that such a bad thing? Ironically, the power of a Windows machine is on the command-line, but unless you're a system admin or network guru, that doesn't even occur to you. And absolutely, the power of Linux is in the command-line shell. Why fight the nature of what Linux is? Instead of trying to avoid shell commands, embrace them. "That's where The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction" comes in.

An Open-Source, Reverse-Engineered Mali GPU Driver

There is some exciting news to break today on Phoronix... Coming up at FOSDEM (the Free Open-Source Developers' European Meeting in Brussels) will be the formal announcement of an open-source, reverse-engineered graphics driver for the ARM Mali graphics processor. OpenGL ES triangles are in action on open-source code. Will this be the start of fully open-source ARM graphics drivers for Android and Linux?
