Open source is said to be about scratching your particular itches - and I've been working my butt off for the last several months along with a small, select team of developers doing just that. All our hard work have so far resulted in a very experimental linux distribution that's definitely not ready for users yet (or even developers) but does have quite a few interesting ideas and features.

This is a joke, right?

Exherbo? It reads like satire to me, but I know geeks either don't have a sense of humor, or they just don't acknowledge its existence.

Exherbo sounds like YIND (Yet Another Niche Distro).

Reading their anouncement, in which it becomes very clear they haven't even reached alpha stage yet and the project is practically and ideologically far from ready to get outsiders looking at Exherbo, I wondered why is this news?

I shouldn't be picking on a fledgling addition to the distro universe, but I still don't know why I should get exited about an Open Source distro with a self announced "proprietary" development style. * we keep the developer team small on purpose - there's much less bullshit this way and we can all agree on the direction needed for Exherbo.

Plus, they cant even use a user base right now. Just don't expect anything to work (seriously!). Ongoing development is pretty fast and we're still at a stage where we happily break everything without second thoughts to installed Exherbo systems or users.

After I finished reading the announcement, my first thought was "Call again when they breach the top 20 list at Distrowatch."

Sounds like Ulteo.

Well, the Ulteo online desktop is a nice idea. A KDE desktop via VNC and 1000 meg storage space that you can log into from pretty much anywhere with a good net connection.

Neat idea, but VNC isnt really the way to go I think.

Gentoo fork?

The reason this very preliminary distro may be getting a lot of attention is the present fractious state of Gentoo. Notice that they say they are keeping the number of developers down to a small select group to avoid "bullsh**". Someone asked them why they didn't just improve an existing distro. The lead dude said because they tried Gentoo and got nowhere.
rijelkentaurus ·
A split from Gentoo to do what Gentoo does/did might not be a bad thing, either from them or for Gentoo, and users would most definitely benefit. I think of Kanotix and the split of Sidux, which is an absolutely beautiful and wonderful distro.

I agree, I like Sidux alot. Easy to configure and easy to use.
