Getting more out of Vim - some tips

I’m donning my flame-proof suit for this post. Vim is arguably one of the two most popular text-editors used in the free software world: built on vi (its name stands for VIiMproved) it will be found as a default package in many GNU/Linux distributions. The other popular editor is EMACS (although I am sure there are those who will argue that EMACS is much more than a mere text-editor). I use Vim a lot in my work and have found it to be a little like chess: a moment to learn a lifetime to master. With that in mind here are some of the tips and handy commands I have picked up over the years.

I wish we could get over the one, true editor BS (I use both), but other than that, nice article, well written, he even spells well. There's a few great tip in there that I never heard of.

I should really work on my vi skills. It's my console editor of choice, and I can hack around in it, but I don't do anything complicated.

I have to say it....

'ed' is the standard text editor.

Indeed, once I installdes somethin (think NetBSD or so?) and vi and pico were unavailable, so the only thing left was using ed.

NetBSD ships vi (the nvi version) nowadays.

That's great. Nowadays I don't have any reason to try BSD anymore I think, but it's great it's there when I want / need it!
